Sudo start lightdm did the trick!

Ubuntu desktop right now.

Ctrl shift esc did not do anything=/ I tried updating with sudo apt-get upgrade. Still the same screen

After startx it loads like a desktop but it simply stays at that screen.

Where would I find newer graphics drivers? And I was also thinking it could be hardware but I thought thered be more of an issue if it was hardware.

I have been trying to put ubuntu on it. When I boot it up now this comes up everytime.

I have an hp pavilion a1710n desktop. I had windows xp black on it and it kept freezing so now I have xp pro 32 bit and it isn't freezing. But my ethernet adapter isn't popping up in the device manager and I cannot find the correct driver anywhere so I do not have internet on it. Any ideas or...

Wouldnt i just be able to get the cpu and motherboard you were talking about, but instead of the 2gb ddr3 ram get ddr ram to match the one i already bought.

Thanks. Also according to the crucuial website i can only have 2 gb ram max because im still running 32 bit. I also just bought a PNY DDR 1 gb ram stick. so shouldnt i stick with DDR1 and not go to ddr3

My monitor is fine and im completely good on speakers. Im just looking into hardware. Im pretty sure my cpu is crap. and as of right now i can only hold up to 2gb ram because im using 32 bit.
