    The Big Freeze

Got the thing working beautifully- apart from the sound. I know sound in Win98 is a headache sometimes, but i've never had this much trouble. According to Everest, I have a Creative SB64V on Intel CA810. I dl an audio driver from Intel- 4035FULL.exe & tried installing it. I got an error...

    The Big Freeze

I finished up pulling a CPU off another old PC, with heatsink attached & installing it. Cleared the BIOS & installed Win98- everything AOK. Thanks again for the help phucng (interesting name btw) First time I've built my own PC- my wife wants one to play Settlers 3 & for the WP. Note: too few...

    The Big Freeze

Yeah I took it off, & the heatsink has come apart from the chip- I'll get some thermal paste next time I'm in the city. Thanks, I've learnt a lot from this forum (& even helped someone out once or twice)

If by the HSF you mean the CPU & heatsink, yeah they were on the board, but I may have removed them at some stage by lifting the plastic lever in the base & taking the whole thing off.

    The Big Freeze

I'm trying to learn by playing with our old PCs- pulled 3 dead ones apart to build one that works. The MB is an SE440BX-2 (Intel) which I think had Win 98 on it. I put in a HDD with Win98. When I turned it on it said 'incorrect system disc' Put the startup floppy & Win98CD in- it started up...

Please, I need help with my dial-up connection.

Instrumediatech makes a good point re your phone calls being redirected- I had that happen myself & ended up with an extra $100 phone bill. You can easily check it by looking in connections in properties.

    Old Compaq Screams In Pain!!

If you're not sure if the noise is coming from the speakers, is there a headphone socket? Just plug headphones in (Not while you're wearing them!) If the noise continues it's not the spkrs.

Please, I need help with my dial-up connection.

That's a helluva story. The cheapest way out of it IMHO would be to whack a new modem in & see what happens. Really- it's quite simple, even I can do it. Just look for a tutorial. Besides if your mum's offering a new PC- you have nothing to lose eh? (I'm no techie, just a learner.)

    Big problem again, please help

A good point that you shouldn't try to walk b4 you can run, but to unplug the fans is pretty simple. Just find a fan, & follow the wires back to the M/B- pull the plugs out, making **** sure you know where the socket is for reconnecting.

    WinXP won't install

Fixed the sucker! It was Phoenix Recover Pro causing the problems. Everytime I tried to do a format or anything, it would take over & change it back the way it was. I eventually restored back as far as I could, despite dire warnings from R/Pro, then was able to format the drive & do a clean...

    WinXP won't install

Thanks for your help guys. I tried formatting from a Win98 floppy, it said 'Drive C does not support format'..... Here's the thing- no matter WHAT I do, it keeps going back to setup, & can't complete setup. I can boot from the CD, & click on 'cancel setup' - no matter what, it just goes back...

    WinXP won't install

I had probs with my Win-XPSP2 OEM after the power went off a couple of times while programs were running- this error message came up : 000003ee I tried putting the CD in (paid for & registered) & 'upgrading' my installation. Half way through, all sorts of error messages came up, 'Can't find...
